Books for Young Children

An Umbrella For Alex

This nicely illustrated book narrates a young boy's journey as he attempts to understand and cope with his mother's abrupt mood swings. It is intended for children ages 6 to 10 and helps them through bibliotherapy. The story is also appropriate for children whose father have mood issues, though the parent reading the book would need to explain this to the child.

Hey, That Kid Got Issues. Maybe It's ADHD

This informational story book is about a family's experience with ADHD. It helps children and their parents understand why some children cannot sit still, talk too much, have difficulty following directions and paying attention, despite the best efforts of the parents. This book is intended for children ages 6 to 10, and has very engaging cartoonish illustrations.

In My Corner On the Moon

This book is intended to help children and adolescents who have experienced some form of trauma or credible threat on their survival. Narrated by 12-year-old Abigail, the book is written in a straightforward gentle style and has a strong psycho-educational component. It is appropriate for children ages 10 to 14, and is beautifully illustrated in a dream-like style.

The Weather House

Dr. Lise Laporte and Dr. Ronald Fraser wrote a children's book for those dealing with parents with borderline personality disorder.
